Building on the light rail sector’s successful adoption of the LRSSB’s safety risk model (SRM), a ‘national tour’ is now helping networks drive further safety enhancements informed by the modelling.
Over the past few months, a series of site visits by members of the LRSSB has enabled operators across the country to review their individual SRMs using the latest incident data collected using the LRSSB’s Tramway Accident and Incident Reporting system (TAIR).
Laura Reardon, Head of Safety Risk Management at the LRSSB, explained: “The sector’s commitment to the reporting system since the last review has delivered a significant boost for the process, enabling networks to make even more informed decisions based on the data from TAIR.

“The reviews also provide the networks an opportunity to take into account changes to their systems, such as extensions, as well as measures they’ve recently taken to enhance safety for customers, employees and the wider public.”
Kicking off in summer, the tour has included very productive workshops with system representatives in Blackpool, Edinburgh and the West Midlands, and the LRSSB expects to visit the remaining four systems over the winter.
“As a result, by the spring of 2026, we should have completed fully updated SRMs for all seven networks, enabling operators and owners to develop their safety strategies, while we will also have an updated, sector-wide model that will help to shape the LRSSB’s future priorities,” Laura added.
