The vital role of the LRSSB in delivering even safer tram transport has been highlighted in briefings for the new government, sector leaders have heard.

The organisation has been asked to prepare several papers for officials from the Department for Transport that set out its aims, objectives and successes to date.

In an update to members of the UKTram Operators Group, LRSSB Chief Executive Carl Williams reported that the documents also outline potential future projects focussing on obstacle avoidance, pedestrian crossings, and AI machine learning for risk modelling.

“As well as helping the new administration to understand the work and capabilities of the LRSSB, we hope these briefings will also help us to tap into larger sums of innovation funding,” he said.

“We have also met with the new Chief Inspector of Railways, Richard Hines, who is already a big supporter of the LRSSB and light rail in general, as we look to further strengthen links with both the government and regulators.”

The wide-ranging update from the LRSSB at the Operators Group meeting, held ahead of the recent Light Rail Summit in Birmingham, also included details of projects currently being delivered by the organisation, including an ongoing pedestrian safety campaign and plans for a new Learning Management System that has received 100 per cent backing from networks.

Future projects under consideration include the production of guidance on seat weight limits and the integration of RIDDOR and RAIB reporting within the LRSSB’s upgraded Tram Accident and Incident Reporting System (TAIR).
