The Light Rail Safety and Standards Board is fast establishing itself as a world-leader when it comes to enhancing tramway safety, sector leaders have heard.
The organisation’s development of a pioneering accident and incident reporting system, alongside advanced risk modelling and support for cutting-edge research into new technology, is already delivering clear benefits for UK networks.
Now, the work of the LRSSB team is attracting significant attention from overseas as it continues to grow and evolve.
Delegates at the one-day summit in Birmingham also heard how a nationwide pedestrian safety campaign has now been embraced by all second-generation systems in England and Scotland during a wide-ranging update from the LRSSB team.
This included a presentation by Mark Ashmore, Head of Safety and Assurance, on the adoption of ‘Bow-Tie’ risk assessments and an update on the Tram Accident and Incident Reporting System, by Laura Reardon, Head of Risk Modelling.
Craig O’Brien, Head of Engineering Safety and Innovation, also explained that the LRSSB was securing funding for a host of innovative research projects looking at improving crossing safety while continuing to publish updates to wide-ranging standards and guidance documents.
Carl Williams, the organisation’s Chief Executive, explained: “The UKTram and LRSSB Summit provided an ideal platform for showcasing the broad scope of the work we’re doing to drive down the risk of accidents or other hazardous events and the wider value we are adding to the sector.
“Many of the projects we’ve embarked upon are helping to put the UK at the forefront of tramway safety and attracting interest from operators from as far afield as Australia.
“The summit also provided the opportunity to set out some of our plans for the future as we work towards greater independence.”
