A year on from the launch of an ambitious national safety campaign, five UK networks have joined forces with the Light Rail Safety and Standards Board to help tackle one of the top risks to tramway safety.
As transport operators come together for Rail Safety Week (June 16 – 22), the LRSSB is reflecting on the success of an initiative aimed at reducing the risk of collisions between pedestrians and trams.
Carly Swift, the organisation’s Marketing and Communications Manager, said: “We initially rolled out our pedestrian safety campaign in Blackpool and Edinburgh during the same awareness week, organised by Rail Forum, in 2024.
“Since then, networks in Manchester, Sheffield and the West Midlands have climbed aboard, adopting our bold message, ‘Two Lines = STOP’.”
Using eye-catching signage at key locations, tailored to meet the branding requirements of individual networks, the initiative has also utilised striking graphics that operators have used on their own social media channels.
Research has shown that making pedestrians more aware of their surroundings when near tram tracks is vital to further improving safety in light rail, and the campaign has been well received within the sector and amongst the travelling public.
“We are currently analysing the results of surveys carried out on networks that have embraced the campaign, and the early results suggest that the message is getting across,” Carly explained.
"We are now moving on to the next phase, with fresh graphics and the relaunch of the campaign in Blackpool and Edinburgh," she added.
