The success of a national pedestrian safety campaign in two UK cities has been highlighted in the latest 'Let's Talk Light Rail' podcast by the Light Rail Safety and Standards Board.

Both Sarah Singh, Tram Director at Edinburgh Trams and Connor Hardy, Quality, Health, Safety and Environmental Manager for Nottingham Trams, say the initiative has delivered a major boost to tramway safety.

In conversation with Carly Swift, LRSSB Marketing and Communications Manager, they reveal how the campaign’s ‘Two Lines = STOP’ message continues to influence pedestrian behaviour and how it has significantly reduced the number of reported incidents on their networks.

In Nottingham, this has been particularly noticeable during major events, including the Winter Wonderland celebrations in Old Market Square. In Edinburgh, it has been particularly effective when targeting students and seasonal visitors to the city.

“Recorded on board a tram at the Wilkinson Street depot in Nottingham, the latest edition of our Let’s Talk Light Rail podcast provides a fascinating insight into the real-world benefits of the campaign,” Carly explained.

“It also provides the opportunity to analyse the results of research into its effectiveness across the UK, which found that up to 70 per cent of people who had spotted the bold ‘Two Lines = STOP’ graphics had changed their behaviour when close to a tramway.”

“The conversation then turns to the future of the campaign, the importance of social media and the need to reach out to schools and community groups to ensure the message reaches an even wider audience.”
