The organisation responsible for driving continuous improvements in light rail safety has further demonstrated its support for the sector by sponsoring a high-profile award.

The National Transport Awards celebrate excellence across the industry, and in 2026, the Tram Operator of the Year category will be supported by the Light Rail Safety and Standards Board.

Carl Williams, LRSSB Chief Executive, explained: “We’re delighted to be able to back this award as we look to highlight the work being done across the sector to reduce the risk of accidents and other hazardous incidents.

“The sponsorship will also raise the profile of our own organisation as we step up the support we are providing to operators, network owners, and other key stakeholders."

Organised by Transport Times, the awards are supported by the Department for Transport (DfT), Transport Scotland and Transport for Wales, as well as the Department for Infrastructure, Transport Focus, Intelligent Transport Systems UK and Urban Transport Group.

The winners will be announced during a ceremony at the Westminster Park Plaza in London on October 1.

Grant Poulton, Managing Director of Transport Times, commented: “We are delighted to welcome LRSSB as official sponsors of the Tram Operator of the Year category at the National Transport Awards 2026.

“The awards recognise excellence and innovation across the transport sector, and it is fantastic to have the support of an organisation so committed to safety, collaboration and continuous improvement within light rail.”
