The growing team driving enhanced safety across the light sector has been further strengthened with the appointment of a dedicated Head of Learning and Competence.

Marlene Pearson-McGrath has joined the Light Rail Safety and Standards Board from Edinburgh Trams, where she previously worked as Training Manager.

With more than 20 years’ experience in learning and development, over the past 12 months, Marlene has also helped develop a sector-wide ‘Skills Hub’ during a part-time secondment to the LRSSB.

In her new role, she will be responsible for the further evolution of the sophisticated online platform that aims to standardise competencies across the sector, enable operators to keep track of required certifications while helping them identify appropriate training courses.

Marlene’s new responsibilities also include strengthening learning and enhancing capabilities within the LRSSB and working with its stakeholders to boost training and development opportunities across the sector.

Following her appointment, she said: “I’m really looking forward to working with colleagues on raising skills at all levels within light rail, as this will be vital to continuous improvements to tramway safety.”

Holding Chartered status with both the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) and the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), Marlene’s knowledge and experience will prove invaluable to the future work of the LRSSB, according to the organisation’s Chief Executive, Carl Williams.

“We’re delighted to welcome Marlene to the team as we look to expand the scope of operations following the adoption of a new governance structure,” Carl said.

“Her work with us on the Skills Hub has already proved immensely beneficial, and her full-time appointment will help take this to a new level,” he added.

Prior to joining the LRSSB, Marlene took part in a recent podcast on the Skills Hub, which can be viewed here.
