The UK’s pioneering approach to tramway safety is now attracting global interest, with delegates at a recent international event expressing a desire to learn from the work of the Light Rail Safety and Standards Board.

One of the world’s largest rail transport events, InnoTrans attracts thousands of visitors from around the world, and the event in Berlin last week provided the ideal opportunity for the organisation to strengthen its overseas links.

Carl Williams, LRSSB Chief Executive, explained: “The conference and exhibition offered a fascinating insight into innovation across all aspects of light and heavy rail.

“While it appeared that the UK is playing catch up in some areas of tramway technology, when it comes to driving up safety standards, we are clearly leading the field, with a number of networks in Europe and the Middle East showing a particular interest in our pioneering accident and incident reporting system, TAIR.

The launch last year of upgrades to the system has helped transform the way risks are identified and managed on systems in England and Scotland. In turn, the data it provides has driven risk modelling that’s enabling operators to make informed decisions on investment in mitigation measures.

“Following the success of the system here, we are now in talks with several overseas operators to establish how we can build commercial relationships that will enable them to follow our lead,” Carl added.
