Light rail safety professionals in the UK will soon have access to a series of technical guidance notes thanks to a new international partnership.

The Light Rail Safety and Standards Board has signed an agreement with the Australian arm of global infrastructure design consultancy ARUP that will see the production of 12 documents covering a broad spectrum of critical operational and safety‑related topics.

These include areas such as operational modelling, incident management, and system performance, all of which are fundamental to the safe and efficient delivery of light rail services.

Craig O’Brien, Head of Engineering Safety and Innovation at the LRSSB, explained: “This latest collaboration reflects our strategic objective to build a comprehensive and authoritative library of standards and guidance for UK light rail systems.

To achieve this, we are drawing on international best practice and technical expertise, as well as the experience and knowledge of light rail safety professionals in the UK.

“By working with Arup’s specialist team in Australia, we’re now able to leverage global experience and lessons learned from comparable networks operating in different regulatory and operational environments.”

Following a detailed quality review of guidance notes by the LRSSB to ensure they are appropriate, relevant and robust for use by UK tramways, the technical notes will be available to download from the organisation’s growing online reference library. This can be accessed through the LRSSB Safety Hub, here.

“This latest partnership demonstrates the LRSSB’s role as a globally connected organisation that can draw on international expertise to support safer, more reliable and more resilient networks for passengers, operators and authorities alike,” Craig added.
